Trump to Decrease Refugee Cap to Historic Low

The Trump administration plans to lower the refugee cap to 45,000 for the coming fiscal year, which would be the lowest since at least 1980 when the cap was created, as first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Reuters reports the actual number of refugees admitted can actually be below the cap, for example after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks only 27,000 refugees were admitted into the U.S.

According to the Wall Street Journal, administration officials are required by law to consult with Congress before reaching a final number. A decision is due by Saturday, before the next fiscal year begins.
