The Senate has confirmed Betsy DeVos as education secretary after Vice President Mike Pence casted a historical tie-breaking vote. The 51-50 vote comes after Democrats were in a frantic push to tip the vote in their favor --against DeVos.
Every Senate Democrat voted against DeVos. Two GOP senators were against DeVos so Democrats did everything they could to try and nab another vote. It didn't happen.
Opponents say she is an enemy of public education and her private school voucher programs hurt public education, but supporters say her plans will provide more choices and opportunities for students.
