The fate of millions of Iraqi civilians is up in the air as Iraqi forces and their allies fight to retake the northern city of Mosul from ISIS jihadists. The battle is expected to weeks, even months.
According to CNN, people fled the area and the road to Mosul is full of abandoned villages.
But, the road out of Mosul is dangerous, with snipers and landmines. If they stay residents will be caught in the crossfire. According to Reuters, Mosul residents say the Islamic State is using civilians as human shields.
The UN warns the retake of Mosul could lead to a humanitarian catastrophe "resulting in one of the largest man-made displacement crisis in recent years." Officials says millions of people will be displaced.
